The Licensed Gun Owners Welfare Association of Bangladesh today reaffirms its support for safe storage practices as a cornerstone of responsible firearm ownership. As gun owners, we believe that how a firearm is stored is as important as how it is handled. Unsecured firearms are a leading factor in accidental shootings involving children, in thefts that supply the illegal market, and in impulsive acts of self-harm.
Consistent with that belief, LGOWAB supports the following measures:
- Storing firearms unloaded and locked — in a safe, lockbox, or with a locking device — whenever they are not under the owner’s direct control, with ammunition stored separately.
- Making secure storage devices affordable and widely available, including free gun lock distribution programs in every community.
- Public education for parents and gun owners on reducing children’s unsupervised access to firearms in the home and in vehicles.
- Prompt reporting of lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement, so stolen guns can be traced and kept out of the wrong hands.
